Starting to trace the history of your house

  • Decide whether you want to find out about the building itself, or about its owners and occupants - or both.
  • Try to estimate the approximate age of the house from architectural features/style.
  • If you can, look at the deeds of the property. Look especially for an Abstract of Title, summarising names and dates from the deeds.
  • Check whether the building is listed as of architectural or historical interest; there are some 5,000 ‘listed’ buildings in Bath.
