Quarter Sessions and Other Court Records

Very minor cases were dealt with by magistrates at Petty Sessions, but most offences were tried at Quarter Sessions. These were held four times a year, and dealt with both criminal cases and some matters of local administration.

 

The following is a list of some of the Quarter Sessions and other court records records we hold:

  • Session books 1682-1785, 1837-1941; related papers 1776-1805, 1824-1837.
  • Petty Sessions: registers of Depositions from 1851; business before the Mayor and Justices 1786-1793
  • Settlement Examinations, city parishes 1763-1866 (incomplete).
  • Alehouse Recognizances 1776-1789, 1806-1814 (incomplete).
  • Coroner’s Examinations and Inquests: 1776-1835.
  • Court of Record, court books 1706-1803; related papers 1737-1838.
  • Court of Request, court book 1785-1788
