Large-scale Cotterell maps

The 'Cotterell' maps of 1852 show the city in amazing detail - you can even see the house numbers!

The maps were drawn up by Cotterell in 1852/3 for the use of Bath City Council, which had just acquired responsibility for public health, and are at 1:500 scale. In all, there are 35 original sheets, with each sheet covering a small area of the city.

You can either order a set of 6 maps for a particular area or areas of Bath for £8 or the entire set for just £20. We can supply the maps on CD or by online transfer.

Please add £1.50 for postage to UK addresses, or £3 to overseas addresses.

How to make a payment

  • At the Record Office: payment can be accepted by cash or cheque
  • By post: payment can be accepted by cheque only
  • Online: 1. Visit the Bath & North East Somerset Council's home page. 2. Using the 'Pay for It' option, choose 'Pay licence or subscription fee, then choose 'Pay Bath Record Office Fees'. 3. Use your name as a reference to complete the form, then follow the instructions. 4. Note the receipt number produced on completion of payment and email this to the Record Office. You will receive your order once payment has been confirmed.
  • Cheques must be made payable to "Bath & North East Somerset Council".

You can use the keysheet to identify which sheet numbers you would like to order. Note that the orientation of the keysheet is unusual - north is to the right-hand side of the map.  Note also that the worn areas on the keysheet are not worn on the individual sheets, though the latter do also show some signs of wear and tear.
