Parish Registers

Parish registers record baptisms, marriages and burials which took place in the parish (Anglican) church. They are a vital source of information for family history before 1837, when the system of registering births, marriages and deaths was introduced.

The parish registers held by the Somerset Record Office and Local Studies have now been digitised and are available to search and view on Ancestry. This is available to search in the Record Office.

We also hold microfiche copies of the registers of all the parishes in Bath & North East Somerset and much of the surrounding area. Registers often date back to the 16th century, and we hold most up to at least 1900.

We also have transcripts and indexes of some registers - mainly Bath parishes for the period up to 1840 - which are very useful when you are not sure of the exact parish of baptism.

See a list of all the parish registers and transcripts we hold.
