Using a family history website

Sources on computer

We provide wi-fi and have four computers available for public use, all free of charge, which you can use to research your family history. There is no charge for using the computers or any websites.

We provide free access to the following subscription websites:

  • Ancestry
  • Find My Past
  • British Newspaper Archive

There are many other non-subscription websites for family historians which you can use in the Record Office.  The following are particularly useful:

  • FreeBMD (births, marriages and deaths, England and Wales, from 1837)
  • BathBMD (births, marriages and deaths registered in Bath, from 1837)
  • FreeReg (parish register transcriptions for UK and Ireland - check if your parish or church is complete)

We also have the following available on CD:

  • National Burial index, edition 3
  • North Somerset marriage index, 1754-1837

We are happy to provide help and advice on using any of these sources, and to suggest other sources which may help you.

To avoid disappointment, please telephone before visiting so that we can reserve a computer for you. Our subscriptions to Find My Past and the British Newspaper Archive allow only one user at a time, so please tell us if you think you may need these websites.

If you are a Bath and North East Somerset library card holder, you can also access a large number of online sources from the B&NES 24-hour library website, including Who's Who, Who Was Who, the Dictionary of National Biography and the Times Digital Archive.
