News: American War - Capt Asgill of the Guards [lately imprisoned in America] at the levee for the first time since his arrival in Town - in good health, but legs still swollen from heavy chains, he was beaten by his guard & could see the 80 ft high gallows outside his cell marked "For the execution of Capt Asgill".

The general opinion is that he should be executed as he executed the American Capt [Joshua] Huddy without orders. Capt Asgill (hostage for Lippincourt's execution) is the 19-yr old only son of Sir Charles Asgill, bart (London, 16 July)

Politics: ## American War - dispute between Sir Guy Carleton & Gen. Washington re. the capture & subsequent execution of American Capt [Joshua] Huddy. Gen Washington insists that loyalist officer Capt Lippincourt [sic = Richard Lippincott] should be executed in retaliation, but as the Court Martial failed, English Capt Asgill (son of Sir Charles Asgill) will be executed in retaliation unless Americans satisfied.
